Blueberries may help with osteoporosis

I have written about blueberries before in my posts anti-aging antioxidant superfoods and the power of berries and why you need our recipe.

But now new research by the Arkansas Children’s Nutrition Centre has revealed that blueberries are even better for you than we already knew! In addition to being a powerful antioxidant, it is now believed that the berries also contain compounds that help with building strong, healthy bones.

Although the research has only been carried out on rats the results are promising. The rats that were given a food ration containing 10% freeze-dried blueberry powder had significantly higher bone mass as apposed to the the group that were fed normal meals.

This would suggest that the compounds in blueberries that also give blueberries their colour, called polyphenols, also contribute to bone health. As you can imagine that would be excellent news as we could then take positive action in preventing osteoporosis.

Further research will need to be done to examine all the effects of polyphenols on humans, but this research is encouraging and extra reason to start consuming blueberries or blueberry extract.
