Colour for anti-aging fashion

defy your age with anti-aging fashion

I recently discovered this absolutely fabulous site WhatKatieWore.com. A young London woman (in her twenties) is profiled each day wearing a different outfit. This website was created as a challenge for a year but has grown to such a phenomenon that they have continued. Readers can now also send in their own outfits in a specially created subsite WhatYouWore.

But the main draw is definitely Katie. Her style is so unique and colourful that you cannot help but be amazed about what she wears every day. I don’t always like it but many times I find what she is wearing inspiring and it encourages me to be a bit more adventurous with my own style.

Adding spice to your wardrobe

Being a woman in my forties this got me thinking. Does a little sparkle and a little fun in our clothes (either with a bit of colour or a bit of fun) not give us that extra energy to appear more energetic and younger. I actually think that it does. Dressing our age does not mean that we can’t experiment with colour or funky accessoires. I actually find myself being inspired much more to older women with a bit of attitude and sense of fun in their style rather than the standard black suit.

What makes those women look good?

This can be:

  • Their hairstyle; I often find that women who can pull off a really short hairstyle in a bright colour look strong and edgy. If you combine this with a modern, well-covered and chique look it can be very powerful.
  • The colour combinations: Don’t always play it safe, but experiment a bit with colour combination and do not try match everything too perfectly.
  • The shoes; although I have never been a big spender on shoes I find that buying some trendy shoes can really spice up your outfit, making it look trendier and edgier.
  • The accessories; this is a great way to add some colour or the latest trend to your outfit.

Of course it’s important to not go too far and dress like a 20 year old. When wearing colour and trendy clothes these are my rules:

  • Do not show too much skin; especially on those places where skin has started to sag.
  • Don’t put too many trendy things together; one or 2 trendy things are usually enough at this age. Combine it with classier items.
  • Don’t go too short; I think showing some leg (even above the knee) is perfectly acceptable if your legs still look good but ultra-minis are definitely out.
  • Halternecks are usually not such a good look at this age.
  • Highlight your assets.

Katie has definitely inspired me to be a bit more daring and add more colour. Here are some of my recent outfits. What do you think? Has your dress sense changed after 40?
