Elden Ring best armor: the best armor sets and locations in Elden Ring

Discover the best armor sets and their locations in Elden Ring

Want to know the best armor in Elden Ring? If you want to survive tough boss encounters, such as Margit and Godrick, you'll need the best armor in Elden Ring. However, with so many different armor sets available throughout the Lands Between, choosing what to wear can prove difficult. Fortunately, we're here to help.

In this guide, we'll show you the best armor sets in Elden Ring for every situation, so that you can defend your character and survive every Elden Ring boss fight.

Best armor sets in Elden Ring

There are many armor sets to discover in Elden Ring, each with their own bonuses and boons that make them suitable for different Elden Ring builds. Below, we'll list the best armor sets, before explaining what makes each set special. Here are the best armor sets in Elden Ring:

Best early armor set: Twinned Armor

The Twinned Armor is the best early armor set in Elden Ring, as it offers high defense and is very easy to find. You can get this armor early on by progressing through some of the first stages of Fia's questline.

When D arrives in the Roundtable Hold, speak with him and then hug Fia. She will give you the Weathered Dagger, which you must take to D. Then, reload into the Roundtable Hold and enter a new room to find Fia by D's dead body (we can only assume she gave him a very strong hug). Take the Twinned armor set from D's corpse.

Best passive ability: Royal Remains Armor

Elden Ring is brutal at times, but the Royal Remains armor set makes this adventure a little easier. With this set equipped, you will slowly recover some HP while your health is particularly low. This won't take you back to max health, but it certainly helps when you're low on flasks and need a little bit extra.

To get the Royal Remains armor set, you need to head to the Village of the Albinaurics in the southwest of Liurnia, Elden Ring's second major region. There, you must speak to Albus and get a piece of the Haligtree Medallion, which we detail in our guide on how to find Malenia, blade of Miquella. Take this piece of the Haligtree Medallion back to the Roundtable Hold to start a fight with Ensha of the Royal Remains. Defeat Ensha and then reload into the Roundtable Hold to find their armor set.

Best stealth armor set: Black Knife Armor

Stealth is brilliant in almost every situation in Elden Ring. While you can't stroll into boss encounters and get an easy stealth kill, being sneaky allows you to start most fights with an easy backstab visceral attack. This deals a massive chunk of damage, potentially wiping some enemies out before they can even react. The Black Knife armor set makes stealth easier than ever, as it lets you move silently.

To find the Black Knife armor set, you need to head to Ordina, Liturgical Town, in the Consecrated Snowfield. Use the Malenia guide we linked above to find this area, and then head to the large staircase on the North side. You'll find the Black Knife armor set on a corpse under these stairs.

Best strength armor set: General Radahn's Armor

Starscourge Radahn is one of Elden Ring's most infamous bosses, and his armor set is incredibly powerful. Those using a Strength build will want this set to massively increase their protection and robustness.

To get Radahn's armor set, you need to defeat Starscourge Radahn and claim his Great Rune. Then, head to the Roundtable Hold and speak with Finger Reader Enia. Look in her shop to find the full Radahn armor set for sale.

Best heavy armor set: Lionel the Lionhearted Armor

Another impressive armor set for those wanting pure protection is Lionel's armor set. This is the armor worn by Lionel the Lionhearted, an NPC in Elden Ring who you might encounter while fighting Radahn or during Fia's questline. It offers incredible protection from all damage sources and high poise, but it's an incredibly heavy set. If you use Lionel's armor, you might want to invest some points into the Endurance attribute when you level up.

To get Lionel's armor set, you must venture to Leyndell, the Royal Capital. Fast travel to the Avenue Balcony Site of Grace and make your way down the steps. Then, jump over the wall on the left side and make your way across the rooftops there. You can find a well nearby that leads into the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds, a key area in our full Elden Ring walkthrough, but keep heading southwest along the rooftops for now.

You'll find a building with the Lower Capital Church Site of Grace, in which you can get Lionel's armor set from a corpse. It's worth noting that Leyndell undergoes a drastic change towards the end of Elden Ring. When this happens, you won't be able to find Lionel's armor set, so make sure you grab this when you first explore Leyndell.

Best mage armor set: Spellblade Armor

If you've seen our list of the best spells in Elden Ring, you'll know how important Glintstone sorceries are. While there are powerful spells in other schools of magic, such as Rock Sling, Glintstone sorceries will be your bread and butter through the early game. With that in mind, we recommend finding the Spellblade armor set, which increases the damage of your Glintstone sorceries.

You can get the Spellblade armor set from Sorcerer Rogier very early on, but you'll need to put your evil hat on. When you first find Sorcerer Rogier in Castle Stormveil, you can kill him to get the Spellblade armor set. Otherwise, you'll need to proceed much further into Elden Ring and do some of Ranni's questline, in which Rogier will die of his own accord. When this happens, head back to the Roundtable Hold and loot his corpse to get the Spellblade armor set without shattering your moral compass.

How to resist scarlet rot in Elden Ring: Where to find the Mushroom Armor set

Scarlet Rot is one of the worst status effects in Elden Ring. You'll die to it a lot as you explore the rot-infested lands of Caelid, but there is a fix. The Mushroom armor set massively increases your immunity, making it incredibly easy to survive the effects of Scarlet Rot. If you want to explore Caelid without dying to every enemy, you'll want to get the Mushroom armor set.

You can find the Mushroom armor set in the Mt Gelmir region on the northwest side of the Altus Plateau. As you explore Mt Gelmir, you will find a bridge with a message on one side that tells you to follow the rainbow stones nearby. Follow them to initiate a cutscene that ends with you falling into the Seethewater ravine. Nearby, you'll find the entrance to Seethewater Cave. Use a stonesword key to get inside and then explore the cave to find the Mushroom armor set on a corpse near some poison plants.

Elden Ring player wearing the Ash of War Scarab helmet on Erdtree-Gazing Hill

Bonus: most stylish helmets in Elden Ring

We couldn't make an Elden Ring armor guide without including some of the most notable helmets and headpieces that you can adorn throughout your quest. During the Limgrave section early on in Elden Ring, you can get the Octopus Head, Pumpkin Helm, and Ash of War Scarab, all of which are incredibly fashionable.

Unfortunately, the Octopus Head and Ash of War Scarab don't offer great protection, so we have to advise that you wear the Pumpkin Helm. Just beware that it's pretty heavy, so it might not be ideal in boss fights.

You can get the Octopus Head by killing the large Octopus enemies on Limgrave beach, near the First Steps Site of Grace at the start of the game.

The Pumpkin Helm is found by killing Pumpkin Head enemies, which you'll fight throughout your adventure in Elden Ring. If you want to farm for this item, head to the Saintsbridge Site of Grace in Limgrave, northeast of Stormgate, to find one patrolling the bridge nearby. You can keep killing it and then quickly resting to make the enemy respawn if you don't get the Pumpkin Helm that you seek straight away.

The Ash of War Scarab can be found on a corpse at Limgrave Tower Bridge, where you will travel on your quest to restore Godrick's Great Rune at the Divine Tower of Limgrave.
