How and why does our face age?

skin aging

We all know that we look older as we age. Signs of aging are most clearly seen in our skin, but why exactly does this happen and how does the skin age?

Aging process of skin

The aging process of the skin already starts in late adolescence but we usually don’t see the effects until we are in our mid 30s.

The skin ages because of the following factors:

  • Cells are replaced much slower and the thick underlayer of the skin, called the dermis starts to become thinner.
  • Elastin and collagen starts to break down, leading to sagging skin, since the skin can no longer stretch back to its usual shape
  • This may lead to the folding of skin and wrinkles and dropping eyelids
  • Moisture absorption of the skin becomes less, because sweat and oil glands are not as effective as they used to be

How does this show in your face?

30+

  • Fine lines are becoming visible
  • The delicate skin under the eyes starts to thin which may result in puffiness
  • You may notice little brown and red spots in the face as a result of sun exposure or broken veins.
  • You may notice and increase in pore seize and the skin may appear more coarse
  • The skin can become dryer as moisture absorption becomes more of a problem

40+

  • Lines are becoming increasingly deeper, especially around the mouth eyes and mouth
  • More sagging skin which may lead to “depressed” looking of nasal folds and drop shadows beside the mouth
  • Eye bags may become more apparent
  • Increasingly dryer skin
  • Occasional breakouts due to hormone inbalance

50+

  • Loss of estrogen further impacts the skin’s elasticity and more line and wrinkles will form
  • More sagged skin, double chin formation
  • More aging spots and uneven skin
