About 90% of all women have some form of cellulite and most of us would like to get rid of it. Essentially, cellulite is the result of excess body fat and will usually show up in high-fat areas of your body, like the butt, thighs, and stomach. Women tend to have it more often than men as we generally have a higher amount of fat.
What causes cellulite?
Cellulite is basically fat cells that are coming through cell walls into the skin’s middle layer, creating the unattractive, dimpled skin surface. It is a form of access fat and therefore the main remedy to solve it is healthy diet and maintaining a healthy weight. Although opinions are mixed about whether or not you can treat cellulite many dermatologists believe that you can.
So what can you do to get rid of cellulite?
- I recently went on a detox retreat and noticed that almost all of my cellulite had gone. This may be because hydrating your body’s cells helps to repair the cellulite.
- Eat healthy. Be sure not to eat too many saturated fats and stay away from sugary drinks
- Drink lots and lots of water. The more the better. This helps on a consistant basis to transport toxins quickly and get them out of the body.
- Cut down on cigarettes and alcohol
- Exercise on a regular basis to tone the skin and make it firmer.
- Use a skin brush regularly to stimulate the blood and lymph flow and remove dead skin cells. This in turn will encourage new cell growth.
- Some supplements like Glucosamine can help your body to repair the dermis and connective tissue.
- It helps to bathe in a comfortable, warm seaweed bath on a regular basis. This helps increase circulation and add minerals to the skin.
What commercial treatments are available for the treatment of cellulite?
Altough almost everyone agrees that a healthy lifestyle and following some of the tips above are the most effective, there are countless treatments and creams available that promise to help you get rid of cellulite. Let’s look at some of them:
- Liposuction: this is often advertised as a way to get rid of cellulite but most reports indicate that this is not an effective long-term treatment as it can cause lumpiness and adhesions. Usually the fat will come back and it generally is not recommended to treat cellulite.
- Mesotherapy: A series of injections are administered to your stomach, thigh and/or buttock area to break up small pockets of fat
- Radiofrequency: this is a form of deep tissue heating. As fats heat up faster than water, the fat contracts and the skin is tightened.
- Spa treatments: can include a body scrub, aromatic wrap and massage
- Cellulite accupuncture: helps to unlock fat deposits and detoxify tissues. Will take about 12 sessions.
