Multifocul lenses for anti-aging

Multifocul lenses good for anti-aging?

One aspect of aging is ever worsening eyesight. Like many women over 40 I suffer from presbyopia, which is is a health condition where the eye exhibits a progressively diminished ability to focus on near objects with age. Although scientists do not know exactly why this occurrs, it is most likely believe to be a loss of elasticity of the crystalline lens, which causes it to be able to focus less.  Similar to grey hair and wrinkles, presbyopia is a symptom caused by the natural course of aging.

Over the last 2 years my reading ability has decreased so dramatically that I’ve had to change glasses twice. And let’s face it wearing glasses for reading does make you look older.

So what to do?

Well, of course you can get yourself some fashionable reading glasses for reading only. But there are a few problems:

  • You constantly lose them
  • You never have them when you need them (they are in the room downstairs which means tackling 3 flights of stairs)
  • Whenever you take your reading glasses out the bag it’s like holding up a big sign “look I’m old, way over 40!”
  • It’s extremely annoying getting your glasses every time for little things like reading the text on a clothing or food label.
  • Half the time you ‘forget’ taking off your glasses and you end up having to hold it in your hand because you can’t see anything in the distance with your glasses on. Also picture a meeting where you keep on taking your glasses on and off.

Multifocal lenses to the rescue?

Manufactures like Bausch + Lomb have now come up with some multifocul lenses. These allow you to read at short distance, watch a computer screen or drive a car, all with the same lenses.  These are just some of the advantages Bausch + Lomb attribute to these lenses:

  • Overall visual results comparable to those achieved with SofLens® Multi-Focal lenses.4
  • Exceptional performance in the intermediate range, where most patients experience much of their lives.
  • Excellent distance performance, which most emerging presbyopes will not compromise for better near vision.
  • Easy adaptation without the visual tradeoffs of monovision.

I might give them a try. Have you had good or bad experience with these lenses? Let us know!
